FAQ

Common questions

Everything you need to know about the ríkisborgarapróf and our platform. Anything else? Write to us.

What is the ríkisborgarapróf?

The ríkisborgarapróf is Iceland's citizenship language test — a mandatory Icelandic proficiency exam for anyone applying for Icelandic citizenship. It tests your Icelandic at CEFR A2 level across four equally weighted sections: reading (lesskilningur), listening (hlustun), writing (ritun), and speaking (tal). The exam is held twice a year (spring and autumn) and is administered by Mímir on behalf of Miðstöð menntunar og skólaþjónustu.

When is the next exam?

The next exam session is expected in autumn 2026 (typically November). Exams are held twice a year — in Reykjavík, Akureyri, Egilsstaðir, and Ísafjörður in spring, and in Reykjavík and Akureyri in autumn. The Ministry of Justice is currently appointing a new exam administrator, so exact dates and registration details haven't been confirmed yet — official updates are published on Ísland.is. Spots are limited once registration opens — don't wait until the deadline.

How much does the actual exam cost?

The official exam fee is 40,000 ISK, payable at the time of registration through Mímir. Registration is not valid until payment is confirmed. There are no refunds after registration.

What level of Icelandic do I need?

The exam is set at CEFR A2 level, which corresponds to the final goals of basic Icelandic courses for foreigners (240 hours of instruction). At this level, you should be able to handle everyday situations — at work, school, and in daily life — and participate in conversations about familiar topics.

How does your platform help me prepare?

We provide realistic, full-length exam simulations that cover all four sections of the ríkisborgarapróf. Our AI evaluates your writing and speaking responses instantly, giving you detailed scores and specific feedback. You can track your progress over time and identify exactly which areas need more work — all from any device.

Is this an official exam provider?

No. Rikisborgaraprof.is is an independent preparation platform — we are not affiliated with Mímir, Miðstöð menntunar og skólaþjónustu, or any government body. We provide practice materials and AI-powered simulations to help you prepare. The official exam is administered exclusively by Mímir.

Can I get a refund?

Yes — if you're not satisfied, contact us within 14 days of purchase for a full refund. No questions asked.
