The ríkisborgarapróf is Iceland's citizenship language test — a mandatory Icelandic proficiency exam for anyone applying for Icelandic citizenship. It tests your Icelandic at CEFR A2 level across four equally weighted sections: reading (lesskilningur), listening (hlustun), writing (ritun), and speaking (tal). The exam is held twice a year (spring and autumn) and is administered by Mímir on behalf of Miðstöð menntunar og skólaþjónustu.

The next exam session is scheduled for May / June 2026. Exams are held in Reykjavík, Akureyri, Egilsstaðir, and Ísafjörður in spring, and in Reykjavík and Akureyri in autumn. Registration is through mimir.is and spots are limited — don't wait until the deadline.

The official exam fee is 40,000 ISK, payable at the time of registration through Mímir. Registration is not valid until payment is confirmed. There are no refunds after registration.

The exam is set at CEFR A2 level, which corresponds to the final goals of basic Icelandic courses for foreigners (240 hours of instruction). At this level, you should be able to handle everyday situations — at work, school, and in daily life — and participate in conversations about familiar topics.
